Watched By Macbeth:
- Breaking Bad-
Breaking Bad tells the story of Walter White, a middle-aged chemistry teacher who is watching his life past by. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, Walter finds himself thinking that there is no way out... until he discovers the profitability of the meth industry. Walter White embarks on a new line of business, slowly making a name for himself with the help of his business partner, Jessie Pinkman. Things start to spin out of control, as what was once just a way to generate money for his treatment, turned into an all consuming obsession for power.
This clearly would have been an obvious choice for Macbeth. Walter White is symbolic for what greed and power can do to you, driving to do terrible things. As Walter is responsible for the death of people close to him along with the downfall of his family, Macbeth can be deemed responsible too for the death of those close to him along with the downfall of his relationship of his wife. Macbeth exibits direct parallels to Walter White, thus making Breaking Bad a great choice.
- Making of a Murderer-
This documentary series tells the story of Steven Avery, a man who served 18 years in prison for the wrongful conviction of rape and attempted murder of Penny Beerntsen. Avery was freed from prison in 2003 after DNA evidence proved he was innocent. Avery was later arrested in 2005 for the murder of another woman, Teresa Halbach, and was convicted in 2007.
Macbeth would adore this show for multiple reasons. Macbeth would be more interested in seeing the other side of how Avery was blamed for the murder, as he framed the guards for the murder of Duncan, pinpointing evidence on him. He also would be interested in how to enact in different ways of murder, becoming inspired from events in the show. The dark, twisted side of Macbeth would come to play when Macbeth watches this chilling series.
- Orange is the New Black-
The show centers around Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30s who is sentenced to 15 months in prison after being convicted for transporting drug money for her girlfriend back in the day. Through the series, the rest of the inmates are met in the all female facility, exposing. corruption and greed within the legal system.
Macbeth would be quite fond of this female dramady. For one, he relates closely to Piper, as a once likable character transitions to frankly, a power hungry b*tch as more power is obtained. Both characters also are pretty unlikeable after getting to know them. Macbeth would also be fond of how the inmates fight back on the power and are able to get the upper hand through force, something he obviously has experience with.
- Mean Girls-
Cady, a teenage girl from Africa, moves to America to embark on the journey that is high school. Cady begins as a fish out of water but establishes close bonds with fellow outcasts Janice and Damien. Cady is given the chance to have a place within the top clique at school, The Plastics. Through the help of Janice and Damien, Cady goes on to destroy The Plastics from the inside, jumping through hoops to try and ruin the life of Regina, the queen bee, and her two side kicks, Gretchen and Karen. Cady becomes consumed with her task, eventually dethroning the queen and becoming the most popular girl in school, but in the process leaves Janice and Damien. Through realization, Cady becomes grounded, letting go of her role and begins to exhibit her true self.
Mean Girls is the classic story of Macbeth. Macbeth epitomizes Cady, as Macbeth is influenced by Janice and Damien to gain the top seat in power and take down her adversaries. Macbeth, like Cady, goes awry from the original plan and becomes consumed with the idea of having power. Along with that, both Macbeth and Cady exhibit a downfall from their seat of power, except Cady doesn't end up beheaded.
Now go out and binge today!
I included Orange is the new black on my list for Lady Macbeth but I agree that Macbeth would enjoy it also, maybe they could binge watch it together. I think Mean Girls is an excellent, creative choice for this because Macbeth (Cady) betrays his best friend Banquo (Janice and Damian) in order to achieve power. Good blog!!!
